E-sports is a new frontier in organized sports Prof. (Dr) Sushanta Sarkar, Professor, Department of Physical Education, University of Kalyani, Kalyani, Nadia, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT | ||
E-sports, short for electronic sports, refers to competitive video gaming in which players and teams compete against each other in various video games. Like traditional sports, eSports involves skilled players, organised competition, and a growing fan base. The eSports industry continues to develop and expand, with new games, leagues, and opportunities emerging on a regular basis. It has gained recognition from the mainstream media, and some traditional sports organisations have even entered the main stage of esports by creating their own teams or leagues. If you look at history, it started in North Korea in the 1960s. At that time, e-sports was not very popular, but today its scope is far-reaching. Although its impact on physical education is not observed in the same way, it can be assumed that its dominance will increase to a great extent in the future. At leisure, people play a variety of mobile games that are usually recreational, but it would not be wrong to say that e-sports is expanding as a profession. Some of the games that have been added to eSports include League of Legends, Dota 2, EA Sports FC Online, Arena of Valour, Dream the kindoms2, Peacekeeper Elite, Street Fighter (Asian Games 2022 included competitive sports) Free-fire, ludo, chess, word games, sudoku, playing cards, etc. are also very popular. Athletes participating in e-sports should be aware of their health, especially taking preventive precautions for sleep disturbances, weight gain, stress, vision problems, metabolic disorders, etc.
