Rabindranath as a Craftsman of Metre: His Concept of Prosody and Contribution to Bengali Metre Suman Modak, Research Scholar, Department of Bengali, Rabindranath Tagore University, Hojai, Assam, India
ABSTRACT | ||
Our discussion highlights a vital aspect of Rabindranath Tagore’s poetic vision: his deep exploration of rhythmic thought. Tagore placed great importance on traditional meters, diving deep into their inner structures to understand how they work. Throughout his writing, he not only analyzed these rhythms but also identified and named various types of meters, which are explored in this article. One of Tagore’s most significant contributions was his transformations of the Dalbritta meter. Before him, this rhythm was often dismissed as a style suited only for nursery rhymes, folk chants, or light humour. Tagore changed the perception, proving that it could carry the weight of serious and profound poetry. Like a river carving a new path, he broke through the rigid structures of Bengali verse and reshaped them into something entirely new. While he is not traditionally called the inventor of Bengali meter, it was through his artistry that it reached its most refined and meaningful form. Along with that, Tagore was a pioneer and a master artist of prose rhythms, showing that even prose could possess a musical soul.
