The Significance and Contemporary Relevance of the Brahmavihāra Quartet in the Light of Buddhist Ethical Philosophy
Dr. Sanjoy Paul, SACT, Department of Philosophy, Raipur Block Mahavidyalaya, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT
The four Brahmavihāras Maitrī, Karuṇā, Muditā, and Upekkhā constitute the core of Buddhist ethical and spiritual philosophy. Rooted in the Buddha’s teachings of non-violence, empathy, and inner purification, these four sublime states guide human consciousness toward universal harmony and liberation. Maitrī promotes unconditional love and goodwill toward all beings, eliminating hatred and enmity. Karuṇā inspires the sincere desire to alleviate the suffering of others, thus fostering an active sense of empathy and social responsibility. Muditā encourages rejoicing in others’ happiness, countering jealousy and rivalry, and nurturing a spirit of collective well-being. Finally, Upekkhā teaches balance and impartiality amidst life’s dualities gain and loss, praise and blame, joy and sorrow thus ensuring inner stability and wisdom.
In a world increasingly marked by violence, selfishness, and mental unrest, the practice of Brahmavihāra offers a profound path to personal and social peace. These four virtues are not merely religious ideals but universal principles of human conduct that transcend time, culture, and creed. When internalized, they transform individual consciousness and establish compassion, cooperation, and equanimity as the foundations of social harmony. Therefore, the four Brahmavihāras embody both an ethical ideal and a practical guide for achieving universal peace, psychological balance, and the ultimate realization of human goodness.
