ABSTRACT
'Badhanhara' is the first successful epistolary novel in Bengali literature, consisting of 18 letters. The central theme revolves around the emotionally charged love story of Mahbuba and Nurul Huda. The protagonist, Nurul, like his creator (Kazi Nazrul Islam), is both a poet and a soldier—a free-spirited wanderer.  Through Nurul Huda’s character, Nazrul portrays his own romanticism, rebellious spirit, and unrestrained way of life. Nurul breaks off his marriage amidst difficult circumstances and goes to war. Two women shape his life-Mahbuba and Sofia-leading him to emotional turmoil. This forms the crux of the novel’s plot.  Two other notable aspects of the novel are secularism and women’s dignity. Nazrul firmly believed that religious beliefs and practices should remain personal and should not dictate state or social policies. The novel features two remarkable female characters. Sahashikadi, a progressive, educated, and independent headmistress of a Brahmo school and Rabeya, the beloved wife of Rabiul, who is revered as Bhabijaan (elder sister). Even Mahbuba, in the end, refuses to conform to marriage, asserting her individuality. Nazrul experimented with a blend of realism and emotional intensity. Despite the communal frenzy of the time, Nazrul’s literature consistently advocated for Hindu-Muslim unity. The novel embodies his dream of a united India, where people rise above religious divides as one nation. This vision reflects Nazrul’s lifelong philosophy, struggles, and self-realization.
"Badhanhara" thus stands as a bold literary experiment -a fusion of love, rebellion, and social reform -mirroring Nazrul’s own revolutionary spirit.
