Then and Now in Tarashankar's Stories

ABSTRACT
Time is always changing. This time flows at its own pace towards its desired goal. Where the memories of the past are mixed with the present and moving towards the future, its meaning seems to be. Where good and bad, happiness and sorrow honor and pride, everything seems to be mixed in the stream of this time. In this flow, the stream of new time comes again and establishes a relationship with the old. In this way, the game of time continues in a cycle. Through this discussion, an attempt will be made to see how the storyteller Tarashankar Banerjee has tried to capture two times in his short stories. An attempt has been made to explore this era and the era through his selected stories. Where Tarashankar has presented the acceptability of the new through the emergence of its acceptance and the irrelevance of the old before the reader through contradiction. He has tried to explore the country, time, person and moving history in stories like ‘Jalsaghar’, ‘Khajanchibabu’, ‘Pitaputra’, ‘Maydanab’, ‘Bisphoran’, ‘Poushalakshmi’, ‘Jatayu’ and ‘Jammantar’. The discussion will attempt to analyze the stories keeping in mind the author’s strong sense of that deep time consciousness. Where the dazzling splendor of the past smiles a smile of contempt in front of the dilapidated skeletal form of that time. And taking this insult, contempt and humiliation in his heart, he has left the new on the old path. And to definitely welcome this arrival of the new, leaving the old behind in the path of time, the author has arranged flower offerings on both sides of the path.
