ABSTRACT
Suchitra Bhattacharya’s Ardhek Akash is a powerful testimony to the life struggles and self-assertion of modern women. In the novel, the author shows that although society speaks of equal opportunities for women, in reality, they still face numerous obstacles. Whether in the family, workplace, or society at large, women constantly need to prove their worth. Yet, they are not mere victims but fighters. The women characters in the novel balance domestic responsibilities while simultaneously pursuing their dreams and identities. Bhattacharya illustrates that even educated and working women are compelled to confront rigid social values. Patriarchal attitudes continue to obstruct their progress. However, through these challenges, women are gradually establishing their position. They protest against injustice and move forward on the path of dignity and independence. Ardhek Akash is not only a portrayal of women’s limitations but also a celebration of their indomitable strength and potential. Through this work, Bhattacharya makes it clear that women do not embody silence—they are indeed half the sky, and without their contribution, society cannot be complete. This message remains highly relevant today, as the questions of women’s freedom and equality are still unsettled and incomplete.
