ABSTRACT | ||
Literature is the mirror of society. It reflects the lifestyle, problems, aspirations, customs, values and beliefs of social people where social philosophy discusses the structure, functions, and changes of society. Social philosophy helps to understand the deeper aspects of society through literature. Literature written at a particular time reflects the social, economic and political conditions of the society at that time. Social philosophy analyzes those reflections and portrays a holistic picture of the society of that time. Literature and social philosophy are closely related to each other. Society and philosophy have had a profound impact on Bengali short stories. From the late 19th century to the early 20th century short stories have shed light on social and moral issues. The works of writers like Rabindranath Tagore, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhaya, Bibhutibhushan Bandhyopadhaya and others are particularly noteworthy in this genre. In their stories, they highlight the prevailing customs, superstitions, class discrimination, and the relationship between men and women. In the 20th century, the short story genre developed further and included politics, identity crises, existentialism and a variety of complex themes. Writers like Manik Bandhyopadhaya, Tarashankar Bandhyopadhaya, Adwaitya Mallabarman have portrayed political and social unrest, famine, partition and the struggle for human survival in their writings. Santosh Kumar Ghosh's short stories are influenced by the post 1930's period. Therefore, the social, political and economic problems of the post 1930's period can be observed in his works. His short stories deal with the civil unrest following World War II, partition, financial hardship, job crisis, prostitution, landlord-tenant relationships, Love, extramarital affairs, live-in relationships, psychological conflicts and the decline of morals are among the themes that emerge in his stories. Here, we have placed fifty of his short stories at the center of our discussion. | ||
