Shekhar Debroy’s Mansakatha Play: Construction–Deconstruction Dr. Prasanta Das, Assistant Professor, Department of Bengali, Government Degree College, Dharmanagar, North Tripura, India
ABSTRACT | ||
The deconstructionists have remarkably explored and restructured the multiple dimensions of textual interpretation. Deconstruction literally implies a special mode of construction or reconstruction. Hence, it may be asserted that a literary work does not possess any fixed or absolute meaning or significance. Depending on the reader and the context of reading, the same text may reveal diverse meanings at different times. Although a particular meaning may appear conclusive after a single reading, multiple readings can gradually unfold several other interpretations, each of which remains equally possible and valid. The present paper analyzes Shekhar Debroy’s celebrated play Monsakatha from Northeast India in the light of Deconstruction Theory. The discussion examines how the playwright, drawing upon the narrative framework of the Mansamangal, incorporates various elements of modern life and contemporary sensibilities into the dramatic discourse. Furthermore, through the innovative reinterpretation of Mansamangal motifs and a modern analytical perspective, the play emerges as a unique reflection of contemporary social consciousness.
