ABSTRACT | ||
To properly understand international politics or international relations, it is necessary to have a basic idea of geopolitics. This article primarily analyzes the concept of geopolitics and explores the ideas of prominent theorists in the field. It provides a brief introduction to the geopolitical thoughts of Friedrich Ratzel, Rudolf Kjellén, John Mackinder, Karl Haushofer, Alfred Thayer Mahan, and Nicholas Spykman. These theorists integrated geographical concepts with politics in their theoretical frameworks. The article explains how knowledge of geography enhances the study of politics and international relations, making it more relevant and practical. It also discusses how a state can play an active role in international politics due to geographical variations such as location, environment and resources. Geopolitical theorists have outlined how nation-states can influence international politics by developing their land and naval power. Additionally, the article addresses the concept of the Heartland and its significance in international relations. Finally, it describes how this theory influenced power competition and the balance of power in international politics during World War II and the Cold War. | ||
