ABSTRACT
The main objective of this research paper is to show how the role of women in Bengali cinema, especially the female characters of stories taken from literature, has been portrayed in Bengali cinema. Here, the main emphasis is given to films based on Bengali literature. Bengali literature is traditionally full of strong, fearless, rebellious and self-confident female characters full of individuality. The main aim of this work is to discuss how the oppressed and struggling female characters created by Ashapurna Devi and Mahasweta Devi, starting from the restrained, calm but determined female characters of Rabindranath and Sarat Chandra, have been adapted to entertainment. While transforming the character into a film, the director's ideas, perspectives and the audience's needs radically change the characters.
In classic Bengali cinema, it can be said that even in the golden era of Uttam-Suchitra, female characters were limited to ideal stereotypes. The characters were focused on the role of ideal lover, wife, and responsible daughter, simple or sacrificial mother. That is, male-dominated values were given priority. In such a situation, directors like Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Ritwik Ghatak brought a revolution by breaking the norms and rules of mainstream cinema. They focused on women's freedom or finding their identity by pointing a finger at social thinking.
This study basically compares how different are the characters shown in the cinema from the characters described in literature and how true are they socially, has the creativity of the cinema been able to retain the original nature of the entertainment style of literature? In short, the subject of this research paper is that Bengali literature and Bengali cinema complement each other. The literary characters portrayed in Bengali cinema act as a social mirror, which reflects the place and role of women in our current society.
