ABSTRACT | ||
Medinipur is the second largest and second populated District of Bengal and has been an agricultural District since ancient times. The population of this District is more dependent on agriculture than other districts of Bengal. The fertile land, natural and geographical environment and rivers of the district are particularly very helpful to agricultural work. In spite of this multiple canal systems were built for agricultural purposes in this District. Some important canals are the Medinipur Canal, Hijli Tidal Canal and the Orissa Coastal Canal. In 1886, the East Indian Irrigration Canal Company began boring process of the Medinipur Canal and in 1871-72 the first irrigation started through this Canal, the quantity of irrigation was 6029 acres. Excavation of the Hijli Tidal Canal began in 1868 and the Orissa Coastal Canal in 1880. Since then, the quantity of irrigation has continuously increased in this district. In 1925-26, 75698 acres of land was irrigated and the profit was 182044 Rs. In 1939-40, 64882 acres of land was also irrigated. Moreover, through various branches of these Canals irrigation was possible in a wide area of this District. Therefore, the subject of this article is how the Canal system in Medinipur District expanded the agricultural system and improved the transportation system in this District. | ||
