ABSTRACT
Narendranath Mitra stands out as one of the significant figures in twentieth century Bengali fiction, particularly for his psychological short stories. His narratives vividly portray the realities of middle and lower-class life in Bengal while delving into the depths of the human mind. The tradition of psychoanalytical storytelling initiated by Rabindranath Tagore found fuller expression in the works of both Kallol and non-Kallol writers, with Narendranath Mitra and his contemporaries carrying it forward. Mitra's stories often explore the intricacies of human emotions and behavior. In representing human desires, frustrations, joys, sorrows, love, hatred and conflict, he frequently employed psychoanalytic perspectives. While at times influenced by Freud's theories, Mitra often relied on his own rational and scientific outlook. Many stories from his collection 'Galpamala' remain memorable for their psychological depth. Through them, he probed the complex inner lives of his characters with remarkable precision. This paper seeks to undertake a detailed analysis of this psychological dimension in Mitra's writings, with particular attention to selected short stories where such approaches are most evident.
