ABSTRACT | ||
Mahashweta
Devi was one of the greatest novelist and fiction writers of Bengali language.
She was also known to be an active social worker. That is why; she had the
opportunity to observe the people different areas very closely, most of which
are indigenous communities and which lies in the lower stratum' of society,
like the Bagdi, Dom, Pakhamara, Ganju, Mal, Khariya, Bauri etc. Based on her
real life experiences, she has created many literature by using the social life
of those inferior communities which have represented different ethnicities in
different fields. She emerged in Bengali literature in 1956 by writing 'Jhasir
rani', an autobiographical fiction. Besides her novel she wrote many short
stories wherein we find many tribal and subaltern women characters who always
remonstrate against their social and sexual exploitation or deprivation. In her
short story 'Droupadi', 'Shikar' we draw up the main
protagonist two tribal characters who protest against their sexual
exploitation. But in her 'Bayen' 'Rudali' 'Dhouli' she left a big question
about social stigma against subaltern women. She spent most of her life with
the indigenous tribal people and with the communities who were on the 'lower
stratum' of Culture. In this article, we will try to highlight the 'life' and
'lore' of different tribal culture and subaltern women of the communities of
'lower stratum' in Mahashweta Devi's literature and it will also be discussed
how she played her role to help them. | ||
