ABSTRACT | ||
The Cārvāka or Lokāyata school of Indian Philosophy represents the materialist stand. They are in clear opposition to the dominant spiritual and idealistic traditions. Rejecting metaphysical entities such as soul, God, karma, and rebirth, the Cārvākas grounded their philosophy entirely on the reality of matter. They only accept the validity of perception as pramāna. For them, only what is empirically verifiable can be regarded as true; all other forms of knowledge—such as inference (anumāna) or scriptural authority (sabda)—are considered uncertain and speculative. This paper will highlight an analytical examination and will try to show how the Cārvākas explained the nature of the world and human life through their doctrine of materialism (jaḍavāda). In contrast to the transcendental tendencies of other Indian systems, the Cārvāka view affirms worldly and human-centered approach of knowledge, ethics, and happiness. This discussion will further explore the philosophical significance of Cārvāka thought in challenging the metaphysical assumptions of Indian spiritualism. | ||
