ABSTRACT | ||
The Dakshina Rarh Bengal was identified as 'Gopbhum' in ancient times. Dakshina Rarh region refers to Ajay in the north, Damodar in the south, Ganga in the east and Santal Pargana in the west. This region is identified as Gopbhum from the habitat of the Gop people. 'Gop' means one who raises cows/Goala. Since the cowherd cow breed has developed in the forested environment of the Ajay-Damodar Doab region, it has become known as 'Gopbhum'. This Gopbhum is rich in archaeological resources and historical monuments. Alpana village Labhandhar under Devshala Panchayat is located in this Gopbhum in district of Purba Bardhaman. Although the village is not very large in size, the entire village has mural paintings of various natural and unnatural subjects of various colors and several temples that are more than three hundred years old, deep forests filled with various trees and shrubs, and this village is home to various animals and birds. The entire village is like a canvas. Coming to such a different environment really fills the mind. Peacocks, sandalwood, partridges, Indian Wolf, hyenas and other species of animals and birds are often seen here. A private organization called Labhandar Annapurna Welfare Association (LAWA) is committed to protecting the village's heritage and jungle habitat. | ||
