Narrating the Real Struggles of the Marginalized in the Frame of the Story: A Study on Shailajananda Mukhopadhyay’s Koylakuthir Desh”
Anuradha Das, Research Scholar, Department of Bengali, Assam University, Assam, India
ABSTRACT
Within the vast landscape of Bengali literature, stories focusing on the working class, especially labourers occupy a significant and unique space. Various storytellers and novelists have brought the lives of these marginalised communities into the forefront of literature through their writings. Among them, Shailajananda Mukhopadhyay is a pioneering and foremost figure. In his collection of stories, he powerfully depicted the horrific plight and deeply miserable lives of coal mine workers, which were full of suffering, hardship and exploitation. By focusing on their narratives, he not only brought their stories to light but also initiated the trend of regionalism in Bengali literature, essentially becoming the first author to discover and focus on the coal belt region. When he wrote this coalfield stories, he didn’t solely emphasize the poverty of the workers. Concurrently, he skilfully portrayed the sexually- driven instincts and their carnal appetites that existed among the coal mine labourers. Through his narratives, he successfully reflected a specific region and the lifestyle of its inhabitants to the reading public. Furthermore, he painted a realistic picture of the owner-labourer relationship prevalent in the mining areas.
