Exploring Māyā and the Path to Self- Realization in Swami Vivekananda’s Perspective Santu Kandar, Asst. Prof, Dept. of Philosophy, Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira, Howrah, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT | ||
Swami Vivekananda, one of the most prominent spiritual leaders of modern India, greatly explored the concept of Māyā from the Advaita Vedanta. Māyā according to him is the ignorance that ties individuals to the material world, without realizing their true divine nature. This ignorance manifests through attachment to impermanent occurrences, identification with the physical body, and ignorance of the ultimate reality- Brahman. Vivekananda emphasized that if someone wants to attain Ātmā-Jñāna or self-realization then he must be overcoming Māyā. He was an Advatin. According to Advaita Vedanta living beings (Jivātma) are identical with Brahman (Paramātmā). He proposed different paths like, knowledge (Jñāna), devotion (Bhakti), selfless action (Karma), and meditation (Raja Yoga) for liberation. Vivekananda said that service to humanity is a powerful means to transcend ignorance or Māyā. He believed that perceiving the divine in all beings and work unselfishly for the welfare of others leads to purification of the mind, finally bringing one closer to self-realization. In present day, when we are going through the critical situation Vivekananda’s teaching is very relevant. His philosophy provides us a pathway to inner peace and self-realization. His teachings encourage us to rise above ignorance and illusion, finding truth through wisdom, love, and selfless action. So, according to Swami Vivekananda, liberation from Māyā and the attainment of Ātmā-Jñāna is not just a theoretical practice but a practical journey of self-discipline, selfless service, and deep concentration. By following this path, one can transcend illusion and realize his own nature. Keywords- Advaita Vedanta, Brahman, Māyā, Self-realization, Liberation
