Female Characters in Bani Basu's Novels: Self-Expression, Struggle, and Re-evaluation of Social Perspectives Sourav Mukherjee, Research Scholar, Dept. of Bengali, YBN University, Ranchi, Jharkhand, India
ABSTRACT | ||
The representation of female characters in Bengali novels has undergone significant transformation over time. Traditionally, women were depicted either as icons of purity, objects of desire, or passive elements within the narrative. However, in the works of Bani Basu, this conventional portrayal is radically challenged. Her female characters emerge as self-aware, resilient, and assertive individuals who, through their experiences, consciousness, and struggles, seek and often attain a distinct sense of identity. They are not merely literary embellishments but powerful reflections of social and historical realities. From a feminist theoretical perspective, Bani Basu's women are not symbols of oppression but agents of change. Their journey—from the primitive social order to modern urban civilization—encapsulates the broader trajectory of women's quest for selfhood. In her narratives, this evolution is rendered with depth and nuance. As such, her female characters transcend the boundaries of fiction to become vital documents of socio-cultural and historical consciousness. Her novels mark a distinct and original turn in Bengali literature, offering a new lens for understanding gender, identity, and resistance.
