ABSTRACT | ||
The Bengali folk language is an integral part of Bengali folk culture.
To comprehend the theoretical identity of Bengali folk language, it is
essential to understand the reciprocal relationship between folk culture and
folk language. In 1846, William John Thoms introduced the term
"folklore," sparking a cultural movement worldwide. Breaking down the
word "folklore" yields two components: "folk" and
"lore." According to folk culture researchers, "folk"
refers to people, while "lore" denotes the traditional,
pre-scientific knowledge and life philosophy of these individuals. The Bengali
equivalent of "folklore" is "lokoshongskriti" (Folk Culture).
Studying folk culture is, in fact, a scientific pursuit, adhering to the
principles of social science. Folk culture researchers identify various
elements, including oral literature, folk art, festivals, folk religion, folk
language, customs, superstitions, and folk science. Focusing on Bengali folk
language, an essential component of Bengali folk culture, the term
"lokobhasha" (Folk Language) refers to the language of the people.
Every individual possesses language and the ability to create it. People can
construct an infinite number of sentences using a limited number of words. Despite this, debate surrounds the definition
and nature of "lokobhasha." Through our research, we aim to analyze
and resolve this debate by exploring the theoretical identity of Bengali folk
language. | ||
