An Analysis of the Status of Women in the Vedic Age or the Contemporary Context
Samrat Konai, M.A. Dept. of Sanskrit, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT
The main objective of this letter is to analyse the status of women during the Vedic period or to gain an understanding of the contemporary context. In particular, it attempts to shed light on various aspects of women's social status during the Vedic era, such as education and knowledge acquisition, domestic and family life, marital status and dignity, economic and social activities, and religious freedom. Women were given respect and dignity during the Vedic period. However, in some cases, women were considered inferior.
Although women lagged behind in education, there were some highly educated women like Ghosha, Apala, and Vishwa Vara. Many women were sages during the Vedic period and held positions of high honour. Names such as Kunti, Kaushalya, and Draupadi can be found in the Ramayana and Mahabharata. During this time, Brahmavadini women pursued lifelong learning and religious practices, such as Gargi, Maitreyi, and Lopamudra. Gargi and Maitreyi are mentioned in the Rigveda and Upanishads, where they participated in intellectual debates with men in the field of philosophy.
