ABSTRACT
Vedanta philosophy is one of the theistic schools of Indian philosophy. Vedanta is the core of the Vedas, and the essence of the Vedas is inherent in the Mahavakya. When the etymological meaning of ‘Mahavakya’ is analyzed, the two words that are basically found are, ‘Maha’ means ‘great’ and ‘vakya’ means speech, that is, the great speech is the Mahavakya. Mahavakya is an important part of Vedanta. If the Vedas are compared to a tree, then its fruit is the Upanishads and Mahavakya is the juice of this fruit. With reference to the Vedas, four great Mahavakyas have been accepted in Vedanta. These four great Mahavakyas are- ‘Aham Brahmasmi’ which is known as the Yajurvedic Mahavakya and is in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad. ‘Tat tvam asi Mahavakya’ which is known as the Samavedic Mahavakya and is included in the Chāndogya Upanishad. ‘Ayam atma Brahma’ which is included in the Mandukya Upanishad of the Artharva Veda and ‘Prajnanam Brahma’ which is included in the Aitarya Upanishad of the Rig Veda. In this paper, I have made a comparative discussion about the Tat tvam asi Mahavakya by highlighting the Advaita Vedanta view and the Dvaita Vedanta view.
