ABSTRACT | ||
The Ramayana is a foundational epic from which numerous literary works, poems, essays, novels and many other forms of literature have been created in a new and diverse ways. Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankardeva was also one such literary figures who drew upon the Ramayana and composed his celebrated play ‘Shriramavijaya Nat’. The plot of this drama is taken from the Balakanda of Valmiki’s Ramayana. Lord Shri Ramachandra incarnated Himself for the destruction of evil and the protection of the righteous. In the play, we see that the young Shri Ramachandra protected the sacrificial site of the sage Vishwamitra from the disturbances caused by the wicked demons. Again, after breaking the mighty bow of Lord Shiva (Haradhanu) and winning Sita as his wife, Shri Ramachandra was returning home when Parashurama, eager to engage him in a battle, confronted him. In order to fulfil Parashurama’s desire for combat, Ramachandra prepared an arrow to place upon the bow. Moreover, Srimanta Sankardeva has left the imprint of his extraordinary talent in the portrayal of characters such as Dasharatha, Viswamitra etc. These aspects demands separate and detailed discussion. Therefore, it has been decided to prepare a research paper entitled “Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankardeva in the Reinterpretation of Valmiki’s Ramayana: With Special Reference to ‘Shriramvijaya Nat’.” | ||
