Postmodernism: A Discussion on the Nature of Contemporary Knowledge in the Views of Lyotard and Foucault Abrita Neogy, Research Scholar, Department of Philosophy, The University of Burdwan, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT | ||
The discussion of knowledge has held a central place since
ancient times. With the passage of different historical epochs—ranging from the
Greek period to the medieval, modern, and more recently the postmodern era—the
understanding of the nature of knowledge has undergone significant
transformations. In contemporary times, knowledge is examined within specific
contexts and perspectives, leading to new interpretations. Alongside this,
discussions of power and truth have become intrinsically linked with the concept
of knowledge.
This paper presents an analytical study of knowledge from a
postmodern perspective, particularly through the ideas of Jean-François Lyotard
and Michel Foucault. It explores how postmodern thought redefines knowledge by
situating it within discourses of power, truth, and contextual interpretation.
