The Concept of World Culture in the Upanishads: A Survey Dr. Swapan Mal, Asst. Prof, Dept. of Sanskrit, Raiganj University, Uttar Dinajpur, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT | ||
Looking at the history
of world literature, it is seen that Sanskrit literature is the oldest literature.
Vedic literature is the oldest part of Sanskrit literature. When the complete
Vedic literature was divided into four parts by Acharya Vyasa, they were called
Rig, Sama, Yaju and Atharva. The last part of these four Vedas is associated
with the Upanishads or Vedanta literature. According to Muktikopanishad, the
number of Upanishads is 108. But according to many researchers, the number of
Upanishads is close to 200. However, the Upanishads on which Shankaracharya has
written commentaries are considered to be the main Upanishads or main
Upanishads. The number of such Upanishads is ten or, according to some
opinions, eleven. In all these Upanishads, the message of world civilization,
i.e. human civilization, culture, peace, love and friendship has been spread.
Such rare and infallible healthy cultural thought is scarce in the world's
non-Sanskrit literature. When the intellect develops through knowledge, one can
then experience the truth and the untruth. Accepting the truth and rejecting
the untruth, that is, the falsehood is the proper action of a wise person.
Realizing the ultimate truth, the undivided, the bliss of truth, the non-dual,
the supreme truth behind the truth is the real search for truth. When such
knowledge is revealed in the heart, differences are eliminated, unity is felt
amidst diversity, and world peace is established by awakening a sense of
universal culture. All these healthy thoughts are combined in the Upanishads.
