Tarapada Ray’s Poetry: A Distinctive Voice
Monoranjan Urao, Research Scholar, University of Kalyani, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT
Tarapada Ray (1936–2007) was a distinguished poet of the Krittibas group. While contemporaries such as Sunil Gangopadhyay, Shakti Chattopadhyay, and Utpal Basu achieved wide popularity, Tarapada Ray’s poetry remained on the margins of the reading public for a long time. Although his reputation later grew significantly as a writer of humorous prose, his identity as a poet remained largely overshadowed. This article analyzes Tarapada Ray’s poetry as a distinctive voice within the context of modern Bengali poetry.
The principal characteristic of Tarapada Ray’s poetry is his use of simple, colloquial, and indigenous language, consciously avoiding artificial poeticism, excessive ornamentation, and foreign influences. Humor functions as an important aesthetic strategy in his poetry—not in the aggressive form of satire or irony, but through self-mockery and absurdity, revealing human suffering, the crises of middle-class life, existential uncertainty, and moral conflict. Rejecting ego and poetic grandiosity, he places “destitution” at the center of his poetic vision, offering a perspective that is unique in modern Bengali poetry.
Through the fluid form of prose poetry, a sensitive engagement with everyday experience, and a focus on the lives of ordinary people as the core subject of poetry, Tarapada Ray demonstrates that poetry is not a matter of loud philosophical proclamation, but a simple expression of the inner truths of life. For this reason, his poetry remains relevant today, and he occupies an important place in Bengali literature as a poet with a distinct and individual voice.
