Swami
Vivekananda's Practical Vedanta is an important reinterpretation of Vedānta in modern Indian philosophy, one that is focused on life, action,
and ethics. For Vivekananda, Vedānta does not
consist simply in a theoretical treatment of Brahman, Ātman, and the world; its real importance is seen in everyday human life,
in character, in action, in service, in social responsibility, and in the
promotion of universal welfare. He takes the Advaitic understanding of the
unity of existence and turns it into an ethical ideal based on the inherent
divinity of man, on respect for all living beings, on selfless action, on
compassion, and on the spirit of service. In the view of Practical Vedanta, the
universality of the Self, human dignity, the ethics of action, education,
social equality, and spiritual freedom may all be regarded as interconnected
aspects of one philosophical outlook. Vivekananda's ideas therefore aim at
bringing together individual spiritual realization with the well-being of
society. Practical Vedanta is therefore not just a collection of religious
instructions; it is an ethical philosophy which seeks to awaken human potential
and promote a just, compassionate, and spiritually based human society.
