ABSTRACT | ||
This chapter, titled Post-Independence Bengali Society and Culture–II, examines three major movements that significantly influenced the social and cultural landscape of Bengal after independence: the Language Movement, the Naxalite Movement, and the Hungry Generation Movement. It begins by outlining the conceptual framework of social movements—defining what constitutes a movement, how its structure and objectives are formulated, and how such movements interact with and transform society and culture. The chapter explores the historical background, ideological foundations, and socio-political contexts that gave rise to these movements. It analyzes the Language Movement as a struggle rooted in linguistic identity and cultural assertion; the Naxalite Movement as a radical political uprising reflecting socio-economic unrest; and the Hungry Generation Movement as a literary and cultural rebellion challenging established norms. By examining their causes, trajectories, and impacts, the chapter highlights how these movements reshaped public consciousness, political discourse, and cultural expression in post-independence Bengal. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the historical significance and lasting influence of these transformative movements. | ||
