ABSTRACT | ||
The role of women is so important in the social, political, cultural and economic development of a country. The role of education is so crucial in the empowerment, prosperity, development and welfare of the women. In the past, due to social, cultural customs, economic constraints and institutional flaws the scope of women education was limited. In the post-independence period of India constitutional provisions were introduced, special importance was imposed on the recommendations of different committees, commissions and national education policies. Later, Operational Blackboard, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, Mid-Day Meal scheme, Right to Education act, etc. helped in expanding primary education, increasing enrolment ratio and eliminating gender discrimination. The objectives of the study are to know about the development of women education in post-independence period of India, to explore the problems of women education in post-independent India and to know about the different strategies undertaken to promote women education. It is a qualitative study. The data has been collected from various secondary sources like books, articles, journals and websites. In this study, different recommendations of various commissions, committees, educational policies are discussed. Furthermore, some important barriers of women education like lack of proper infrastructure, lack of implementation of policies, social inequality, patriarchy are also highlighted. The study also informs various policies like Beti Bachao and Beti Padhao, Udaan, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya etc. for the development of women education in the post-independent period of India. | ||
