Surya-Dighal Bari: A Reconstruction of a Narrative Ranjit Sarkar, SACT, Department of Bengali, Samsi College, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT | ||
Surya Dighal Bari is a novel written by the renowned fiction writer of East Bengal, Abu Ishaq. Set against the backdrop of the Partition of India, famine, and communal riots, the novel vividly portrays how these historical realities emerged as curses in the lives of ordinary people. Alongside this, the author shows how, under the pressure of social authority, Muslim women are compelled to live lives of terror behind the veil, and how these rigid codes are eventually challenged and broken—particularly through the character of Joygun. The novel highlights how women struggle for their existence and self-respect, and also draws attention to the terrifying consequences of child marriage within Islamic society. Behind the façade of a seemingly folktale-like narrative, the novel realistically depicts how figures like Gadu Pradhan carry out social exploitation. Furthermore, the story illustrates how the young boy Hasu is broken by the daily struggle for survival, yet simultaneously reshapes and rebuilds himself. All these aspects are explored through an analytical discussion of the novel’s narrative structure.
