The Relevance of Hazrat Umar Farooq (RA) in the Literary Endeavours of the Sudhakar Group – A Historical Review Mousumi Dutta, Assistant Professor, Department of History, Samsi College, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT | ||
Christian missionaries who came to India, particularly to Bengal, from the West began to weaken the foundations of Islam by attacking it with abusive and derogatory language. Toward the end of the nineteenth century, the Sudhakar Group of Bengal stepped forward to provide an appropriate response to this aggression. Centered around the journal Sudhakar, a number of talented Bengali Muslim writers united, collectively known as the “Sudhakar Group.” By presenting Islam correctly to the Muslim masses of Bengal, they established an ideal example that remains unparalleled. The second Caliph, Hazrat Umar (RA), followed the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). He succeeded in spreading Islam throughout the world and safeguarding it from the hands of the unbelievers. Drawing inspiration from the life and teachings of Hazrat Umar (RA), the Sudhakar Group initiated an intellectual movement and refuted the defamatory propaganda against Islam. Their success should not be underestimated. They had neither wealth nor manpower. Despite the lack of patronage, they possessed deep devotion and unwavering faith in Islam. Protecting the Muslim community of Bengal from the conversion efforts of Christian missionaries and simultaneously promoting Islam through Bengali writings centered on the life and teachings of Hazrat Umar (RA), who was regarded as a guiding light of the Islamic community—these efforts of the Sudhakar Group stand as a bright example for future generations.
