ABSTRACT | ||
An autobiography is a work in which a person
expresses the experiences, feelings, and thoughts of their life in their own
words. Sudakshina Sen was an educated and cultured woman of the nineteenth
century. In her autobiography ‘JivanSmriti’, she described not only her
personal life but also the social system of her time.
She wrote about her family
environment, social customs, religious beliefs, and various superstitions
present in Hindu society during that period. Her writings clearly show the
position of women, the limitations on their education, and the conservative attitude
of society toward women. The influence of Brahmanical traditions and the ideas
of social reform are also reflected in her work.
In this autobiography,
Sudakshina Sen attempts to understand society and history from a woman’s
perspective. she also highlighted the social changes of her time, the spread of
education, and the awakening of women. She mentioned several important social reformers,
such as Keshav Chandra Sen, Vijaykrishna Goswami, and Bidhan Roy, whose ideas
help us understand the intellectual climate of that period.
‘JivanSmriti’ is not
merely a personal life story; it is an important document for understanding
nineteenth-century society and history. Through the autobiography of a woman,
we can see a realistic picture of the social conditions of that time. In this
article, based on Sudakshina Sen’s autobiography ‘JivanSmriti’, I have tried to
explore the nature of nineteenth-century Indian society, the challenges faced
by women, and the issues related to women’s awakening. | ||
