ABSTRACT
The literary works of Jatindra Mohan Bagchi hold immense value in reconstructing the regional history of Nadia, serving as cultural and historical documents for both present and future generations. His writings provide vivid portrayals of the socio-economic and cultural life of his time, particularly the experiences of common people, the struggles of rural women, and the socio-political realities shaped by zamindars and colonial authorities. Bagchi’s depiction of the peasants’ oppression by British police during the forced indigo cultivation stands as a striking testimony to a painful phase of colonial history.
Equally noteworthy are his detailed descriptions of Nadia’s geographical landscape and archaeological heritage, with references to ancient villages, monuments, and age-old traditions. His essays record rural festivals and fairs, such as Durga Puja, along with accurate accounts of village economy and livelihoods. He further explored communal relationships between Hindus and Muslims, acknowledging tensions while emphasizing harmony and brotherhood.
Bagchi also preserved aspects of folk culture, including village women’s rituals like the Punya Pukur and the lost Jam Pukur festival. His references to folk songs, particularly the Ekdil Pir’s song, enrich the cultural fabric of Bengal and highlight the oral traditions of the region. Moreover, his documentation of religious conversions in areas like Shikarpur adds another important layer to Nadia’s history. Through his portrayal of ancient places, rivers, festivals, and rural life, Bagchi crafted a comprehensive narrative that affirms his enduring contribution to Bengali literature and regional historiography.
