ABSTRACT | ||
Rabindranath Tagore holds a significant place in Bengali literature
because of his unique writing style and choice of subjects. From his childhood
to adulthood, he closely observed the lives of women, including those in his
own Thakurbari. These observations inspired him to address the conditions of
women in society. In his stories such as ‘Strirpatra’, ‘Haimanti’, and
‘Denapawna’, we see how newly married women faced extreme struggles under the
dominance of others. Tagore highlights how the dowry system in society
gradually harms women, leading not only to social problems but also to their
exploitation. Some women suffer and even die due to domestic violence and
conflicts within their husbands’ families. This pressure often leaves women
helpless, yet some rise against oppression. By speaking out against violence,
these women become symbols of courage. Through his creation of female
characters, Tagore aims to present strong and courageous individuals who
inspire other women to raise their voices against injustice. | ||
