ABSTRACT | ||
Literally, the
word 'thriller' refers to something that evokes intense excitement; in essence,
any suspenseful subject matter qualifies as a 'thriller.' Although detective
stories once held undisputed sway over the realm of Bengali literature, there
are distinct differences in narrative structure between thrillers and the
genres of detective or mystery fiction. Bengali literature boasts a long and
rich history of detective and mystery stories. While the journey of the Bengali
thriller effectively began with Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, those early works
offered merely a glimpse of the genre; subsequently, many renowned authors have
enriched this tradition. The focus of our discussion here is the thriller
fiction of Smaranjit Chakraborty—specifically, we aim to explore how the
thriller genre manifests in the five short stories of his ‘Adamya’ series
(published in 2013) and how the character Adamya Sen emerges as the central
figure of these narratives.
