Śūnyatā and Madhyamā Pratipad: The Contribution of Acharya Nāgārjuna to the Metaphysical Evolution of Buddhist Philosophy
Abdul Samad Shikh, Independent Research Scholar, Kolkata, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT
Acharya Nagarjuna occupies a unique and monumental position in the history of Buddhist philosophy. His seminal contribution, the doctrine of Sunyata, serves to illuminate and deepen the foundational teachings of Gautama Buddha. This article aims to examine the profound interrelation between Nagarjuna’s concept of Sunyata and the Buddha’s Middle Way (Madhyama Pratipad). The analysis clarifies that Sunyata is not a state of nihilism or non-existence; rather, it signifies the absence of independent existence. Nagarjuna argues that no phenomenon in the world is autonomous, as every entity arises in dependence upon specific causes and conditions. This fundamental interdependence is defined as Sunyata or Nisvabhavata (the lack of intrinsic nature). What the Buddha identified as Pratityasamutpada (Dependent Origination) is, according to Nagarjuna, ultimately equivalent to Sunyata at the ultimate level of reality. Furthermore, the paper explores how Nagarjuna employed rigorous logic to demonstrate that objects possess no permanent essence and that motion or change cannot exist independently. It also highlights Nagarjuna’s masterful refutation of the misconception that accepting Sunyata would invalidate the Four Noble Truths. Ultimately, the study concludes that Sunyata is not merely a complex theoretical construct, but also a profound practical method for dispelling mental delusions and conceptual fabrications. To truly grasp the essence of Buddhist teachings and to facilitate the path toward Nirvana, Nagarjuna’s philosophical insights remain profoundly relevant in the contemporary era.
