ABSTRACT | ||
This article examines the stylistic
features of Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay’s juvenile novel Patal Ghar through the
lens of stylistics. Style, as a manifestation of an author’s individuality,
reflects distinctive linguistic choices in terms of diction, syntax, and
narrative technique. Drawing upon theoretical perspectives from scholars such
as Arun Kumar Mukhopadhyay and Pabitra Sarkar, the study highlights how
stylistics serves as a scientific method for analyzing literary language.
The paper contextualizes children’s
and adolescent literature in Bengali literary tradition before focusing on the
stylistic traits of Patal Ghar. It identifies key features such as the
predominance of short and simple sentences, along with the use of complex,
compound, and mixed sentence structures. The narrative also employs T-units,
incomplete sentences, and conversational language to maintain accessibility and
engagement for young readers.
Further, the study explores the use
of verbs (including impersonal and compound forms), onomatopoeic expressions,
reduplication, slang, and code-switching as integral stylistic devices. The
novel’s discourse structure alternates between descriptive and dialogic modes,
enhancing narrative dynamism. Additionally, figures of speech like imagery and
simile contribute to vivid visualization and emotional resonance.
Overall, the article argues that
Mukhopadhyay’s stylistic craftsmanship— marked by simplicity, variety, and
expressive richness— effectively caters to the cognitive and imaginative world
of adolescent readers, establishing him as a significant figure in Bengali
juvenile fiction. | ||
