ABSTRACT
The short story is one of the newest forms of Bengali literature. Since its early stage of development, it has undergone various changes with the passage of time. These changes have sometimes occurred in terms of theme and subject matter and sometimes in terms of form and narrative technique. Among the factors that accelerated these transformations, literary movements played an important role. If we examine the history of Bengali literature, we can see that different literary movements emerged at different times and influenced the course of literature. In this context, one of the most significant literary movements is the Shastrabirodhi movement. It was mainly a short story–centered literary movement. In 1962, several writers such as Ramanath Ray, Shekhar Basu, Subrata Sengupta, Kalyan Sen, Ashis Ghosh and later Balaram Basak, Amal Chand and Sunil Jana initiated this movement around the magazine Ei Doshok.
The main objective of this movement was to break away from the conventional literary tradition and introduce a new approach to short story writing. Instead of giving importance to the traditional plot or storyline, the movement emphasized the writer’s ideas, thoughts and inner experiences. One of the notable writers associated with this movement was Balaram Basak. However, he was not involved in the movement from the beginning; he joined later through the sixth issue of the magazine Ei Doshok, which served as the mouthpiece of the movement. In this magazine he wrote a total of eleven short stories. The present paper will mainly focus on those stories. It will also attempt to examine their literary value and significance in the context of the Shastrabirodhi movement and evaluate their relevance in contemporary literary discussion.
