The Transformation of the Bengali Language on Social Media: A Linguistic Review of Changes in Spelling, Vocabulary, and Sentence Structure
Subhadip Roy Chowdhury, Independent Researcher, Nadia, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT
Social media has become one of the most important domains of everyday human communication, and this evolving mode of interaction has profoundly influenced language use, structure, and development. In the case of the Bengali language, significant changes can be observed in spelling, script, vocabulary, sentence structure, and language mixing across digital platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, X (formerly Twitter), and other online media. In particular, the widespread use of Romanized Bengali, Bengali–English code-mixing and code-switching, English loanwords, hybrid verb constructions, abbreviations, emojis, and hashtag-based expressions has contributed to the emergence of distinctive features of contemporary digital Bengali.
This review article examines the transformation of the Bengali language on social media from both linguistic and sociolinguistic perspectives. The discussion focuses on the increasing informality of Bengali spelling, the use of Romanized Bengali, the emergence of digital vocabulary, Bengali–English code-mixing and code-switching, hybrid verb constructions, sentence shortening, ellipsis, and other characteristic features of digital discourse. Recent corpus-based research analyzing a 120,000-token corpus compiled from Facebook, Twitter (X), YouTube, and Instagram has identified stable insertional patterns of Bengali–English code-mixing, Bengali-based hybrid verb constructions, and platform-specific linguistic variations (Sweet et al., 2025).
The review demonstrates that the transformation of Bengali on social media should not simply be interpreted as linguistic deterioration or language decay. Rather, it represents a complex process of linguistic adaptation shaped by language contact, technological affordances, communicative efficiency, multilingualism, and the construction of new social identities. Nevertheless, it is essential to ensure that the influence of informal digital language does not undermine proficiency in standard academic Bengali. Therefore, greater emphasis should be placed on digital language literacy and register awareness to help users distinguish between informal online communication and formal academic writing.
