Selected Assamese Short Story Writers and Stories in the Context of Social Reality: An Analytical Study
Dr. Titan Rudra Paul, Assistant Professor & Head of the Department, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Government Model College, Assam, India
ABSTRACT
Although folktale-based narratives had been prevalent in Assam since ancient times, the true development of the Assamese short story began in the second decade of the twentieth century. From this period onward, Assamese short stories moved beyond mere narrative tradition and emerged in entirely new forms. In the early phase, as in other Indian literatures, literary activities in Assam developed around contemporary journals and periodicals. Most Assamese writers of that time began their literary careers by writing short stories in these publications.
In their stories, along with the depiction of various psychological conflicts within individuals, writers also portrayed contemporary social issues such as political instability, communal tensions, livelihood crises, frustration, and the struggle for survival with a strong sense of realism. The primary aim of this article is to present an outline of such contemporary social realities as reflected in Assamese short stories.
Considering the limitations of scope, this discussion remains concise. As a result, it has not been possible to include all Assamese short story writers in this article; instead, only selected writers and their works have been discussed. At the same time, Bengali translations of Assamese stories have been used as the primary source for this study. In this regard, the book titled “Asamiya Galpa Sankalan”, edited by Nirmalprabha Bordoloi and translated into Bengali by Sujit Chowdhury, has been used as the main source material for this research article. The present discussion follows a descriptive analytical method.
