Revisiting History through the Rhymes and Poems of Sadhan Barik Dr. SK Jahir Abbas, Assistant Professor, Onda Thana Mahavidyalaya, Murakata, West Bengal, India | ||
ABSTRACT | ||
Literature often preserves the social, political, and cultural experiences
of an age and may therefore serve as an important source for reconstructing the
history of a particular period. Sadhan Barik, a relatively less-publicized
Bengali poet and writer of rhymes, has transformed contemporary events,
political developments, social changes, and everyday experiences into incisive
poetic expressions. His rhymes and poems, characterized by simplicity, satire,
irony, and social consciousness, provide significant glimpses into the
political and socio-economic history of West Bengal during the closing decades
of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first century. This
article explores the historical consciousness embedded in selected poems and rhymes
of Sadhan Barik, particularly those collected in Sadhan Bariker Nirbachita
Chhara O Kabita Sangraha. The study examines how the poet records various
aspects of contemporary life, including the introduction of the Kolkata Metro,
the political tensions within the Left Front period, rural transformation, the
Mid-Day Meal scheme, the changing role of local political leadership,
Rabindranath Tagore’s changing political-cultural reception, the theft of
Tagore’s Nobel medal, irregularities in teacher recruitment, and the
ideological transformation of the Left. Particular attention is given to the
poet’s use of satire and irony as literary devices for documenting
contradictions between political ideals and social realities. His works reveal
how ordinary experiences and contemporary incidents can acquire historical
significance through literary representation. The article argues that Barik’s
poems possess both literary and documentary value, offering readers a
distinctive perspective on the socio-political transformations of contemporary
Bengal. Thus, his poetry may be viewed as an alternative literary archive of the
time.
