Rudraprasad Sengupta’s Gotrohin: In Protest and Resistance

ABSTRACT
In the period following the Partition, some infiltrators entered India. However, their arrival was not always a source of happiness; rather, it often brought disruption and turmoil to human lives. The playwright Rudraprasad Sengupta’s play Gotrohin (1973) is no exception and reflects this very idea. Into the family of the central character, Salek Ahmed Khan, enter intruders such as Enayet and Nilu, who are relatives of his wife Zainab. In reality, they come to India from Chittagong, Bangladesh, in search of work and financial stability.
However, their arrival casts a shadow of disaster over Salek Ahmed Khan’s family. Due to his experiences working at the docks, Salek does not easily trust people. Yet, paradoxically, he places blind trust in Enayet and Nilu, and like a tragic hero under the control of fate, his life moves toward a sorrowful end. Nilu, while being sheltered in their home, falls in love with Shaheen, which Salek cannot accept. In trying to separate Nilu from Shaheen, cracks begin to appear in the mutual trust within his own family.
Despite his efforts to reclaim his “honour and rightful dignity,” the protesting Salek fails. Ultimately, centering on the issue of illegal entry into India, Salek informs the police, which leads to conflict with Enayet. In the ensuing confrontation, Salek is killed at Enayet’s hands.
Through this narrative, the playwright seeks to portray how the intrusion of displaced individuals can lead to the deterioration of interpersonal relationships, thereby endangering the harmony of a well-structured family life.
