Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain: The Idea of Women’s Liberation in Literature Roquea Parvin, SACT–I, Department of Bengali, Samsi College, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT | ||
Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain’s name is permanently inscribed in golden letters in the history of Bengali literature and the narrative of the Bengali people’s modern awakening. Her invaluable literary creations, efforts in spreading education, and work for social reform helped the Bengali nation attain fulfillment in many ways. At the core of her social and literary pursuits lay a steadfast commitment to women’s liberation and awakening. She was born into a backward Muslim society in Bengal, and the plight of women within that society deeply disturbed her. With the aim of remedying their miserable condition, she not only took up the pen but also actively engaged in building institutional and social frameworks. However, it would not be entirely accurate to say that her efforts were confined only to Muslim women; transcending religion, caste, and community, she dedicated her entire life and body of work to the liberation of all Bengali women.
