ABSTRACT | ||
Rabindranath Tagore was
not a conventional political thinker, but his ideas about the nation and his
motherland are reflected in his various writings. Rabindranath took an active
role in politics during the first Partition of Bengal and despite being a
leading proponent of constructive swadeshi or ‘Atmashakti’, he later
distanced himself from mainstream politics. After that, he expressed his
thoughts on the various political upheavals happening in the country. There were
some ideological agreements and disagreements between Tagore and Gandhi, who was
the central figure of India’s freedom movement. But Tagore still accepted
Gandhi as a true national leader. This helps us understand an important aspect
of Tagore’s idea of the nation. It further explains what Tagore meant by
‘nation’, why he believed that in India society was more important than the
concept of a nation-state, and what ‘Swadesh’ meant to him. His
criticism of western nationalism and his warning about the ‘terrible dangers’
hidden within it are major elements of his political thought. His views on
‘Patriotism’ and his thoughts on his homeland are expressed in his literary
works. Tagore’s voice often carried the message of universal brotherhood, and
his political thinking reflected a deep sense of internationalism. In essence,
this article tries to explore Tagore’s patriotic identity – someone who was
critical of aggressive or narrow forms of nationalism, but deeply devoted to
his motherland, and for whom the well-being of all human beings came first. | ||
