Unknown Information Revealed in Rabindranath Tagore’s World of Identity: Insights from an American Writer
Dr. Shyamal Kumar Mondal, SACT, Galsi Mahavidyalaya West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT
Overall five times Rabindranath Tagore had visited Amarica:1912-13, 1916-17, 1920-21, 1929 and 1930. His maiden visitation was an allied journey with his son Rathindranath Tagore and daughtet-in-law Pratima Devi. The second one, i.e. in 1916, proved to be an odyssey. Tagore's personal acquaintance with Zona Gale (1874-1938) in the house of Harriet Moodie stood out to be a less acclaimed, yet an important chapter in Tagore's life story. Zona Gale, a prominent American feminist writer and a Pulitzer Prize winner, already came across some of the renderings of The Gitanjali, and it certainly made her curious and respectful for  this Asian stalwart. Importantly, this visitation was brought to light for the first time by Amalendu Bagchi in a well-known Bengali journal Desh. However, in the biographies of Tagore, this is almost unsung. This paper/essay thus attempts to focus on Tagore's encounter with Gale as a significant landmark in both the persons' life. It also seeks to put forward the liberal minded Gale's noble character and feministic views. For Tagore, he not only drew interest in her as mere a Pulitzer Prize winner, but also for her deep diving perspective on humanity and civilization. It may be seen a cultural encounter between two different epoch-making personalities, how often alike they think, alike they work. With a brief introduction to their life, this paper also will bring to attention the efficacy of their meetings, conversations etcetera. And under this light, it will also be an important addition to Rabindra scholarship.
