An Analysis of the Theory of Necessity (Prayojan Tattva) Shakti Pal, Independent Research Scholar, Birbhum, West Bengal, India
ABSTRACT | ||
The present research paper discusses the classical and philosophical significance of the theory of ‘Prayojana’ in detail. In the context of phonology, the etymology, definition and its causal role of the word ‘Prayojana’ are explained and it is shown that Prayojana acts as the main motivation behind every action in human life. The various interpretations and applications of ‘Prayojana’ in different philosophies such as Kāvyāśāstra, Vyākaraṇa, Nyāya, Vedānta and Sāṃkhya are comparatively analyzed. In particular, the role of Prayojana in Anubandhacatuṣṭaya and its relationship with the knowledge-instinct are discussed. The significance of recognizing ‘Prayojana’ as a separate entity in Nyāya philosophy and the division of secondary and primary Prayojanas are also explained here. On the other hand, Nāgārjuna’s critical position in Buddhist philosophy is also included in the discussion. The article proves that ‘Prayojana’ is not just a terminological concept, but is the main driving force of human thought, knowledge process and action-instinct.
