ABSTRACT
Mrinal Sen (1923-2018) is a notable and iconoclastic filmmaker of the parallel stream of Indian cinema. Through his formal experiments, he brought about a revolutionary wave in Bengali cinema, which marked the beginning of a new chapter in its history. Such innovation is not seen in any of his predecessors, contemporaries, or successors among Bengali filmmakers. By infusing literary narratives with new ideas in the context of a new era, he reconstructed and reinterpreted those narratives to present his themes and concerns. Whether his films are based on literature or built on original screenplays, he has continually experimented with narrative and form.Although his first film released in 1955 (‘Raat Bhore’) up to ‘Pratinidhi’ (1964), he largely followed conventional forms or traditional modes of narration. But from the film ‘Akash Kusum’ (1965) onward he consciously moved away from tradition and opened up new possibilities in storytelling, creating a new cinematic language. Essentially, it was through the efforts of a few thinkers and filmmakers like him that the new wave in Indian cinema was born. His conviction is considerably reflected in the much-discussed film ‘Kolkata 71’ (1972).
