Women’s Self-Awakening in the Context of Pratham Pratishruti

Many female authors have significantly enriched the
realm of Bengali fiction through their literary contributions. Ashapurna Devi
stands out as a prominent figure among them. Her novel ‘Pratham Pratisruti’ is
particularly noteworthy. In this work, the novelist articulates the intense
yearning for self-liberation that awakens within a woman—a desire born from the
hardships endured over generations due to social inequality and a lack of
awareness regarding self-identity and the meaning of life.
The objective of this paper is to explore the themes
of women’s liberation by examining the female characters created by Ashapurna
Devi—specifically the protagonist, Satyabati, and her life’s struggles. Through
Satyabati’s journey, the author seeks to address broader issues concerning the
emancipation of women. The novel is analyzed here from a feminist perspective,
focusing on key events within the narrative. The discussion highlights various
social issues of the era, such as superstition, gender discrimination, women’s
education, self-respect, independent thinking, and the development of
individual identity. By virtue of her nature, Satyabati emerges as a unique and
exceptional character in the society of her time. Her struggle was not confined
to her personal life alone; rather, she became a symbol of dignity and rights
for all women. Consequently, ‘Pratham Pratisruti’ is regarded as a seminal
novel in Bengali literature regarding women’s liberation and the awakening of
women.
