ABSTRACT | ||
Acquiring Bengali reading skills at the primary level
forms the very foundation of a student's future academic life. However, in the
context of several government-aided primary schools in Dakshin Dinajpur
district, it is observed that many students coming from marginalised social
backgrounds and weak economic environments face various challenges in reading
Bengali. The primary objective of this small-scale developmental research is to
identify the existing challenges in acquiring Bengali reading-skills and to
explore potential solutions. Since there
is a gap between the regional dialect and standard Bengali, students who are
otherwise fluent in their regional language often hesitate to speak standard
Bengali in the classroom. This linguistic difference impacts primary student’s
reading fluency and comprehension. The twenty-first-century multilingual
environment expands vocabulary and aids reading acquisition, yet creates
potential linguistic confusion. The culture of migrant labor in the region and
the lack of educational support from families further complicate this process.
However, observations also reveal that providing simple explanation during teaching using the regional dialect,
significantly increases their attention, participation, and comprehension of the lesson.
Through
interviews conducted with a limited number of teachers selected via the
‘purposive sampling’ method, the researcher’s classroom observations, it has
emerged that linguistic gaps are closely linked with the social realities and
the multilingual environment of the current century. The application of
language-sensitive and child-centric teaching methods at the primary level can
play a crucial role in improving Bengali reading skills. | ||
