ABSTRACT | ||
Translation is a form of art through which the distinct culture of one nation enters the cultural sphere of another. In the modern era, translation has thus emerged as an important medium of communication. When anti-colonial politics gained momentum in Bengal, translation became a necessary means of presenting indigenous culture to the wider world. In a country like India, translation is truly relevant for understanding the diverse social texts of society and for comprehending one another’s worlds. Moreover, in the contemporary period, translation has become an essential tool for articulating the voices of marginalized communities. This paper examines how two different translations of Rabindranath Tagore’s short story “The Postmaster” have represented cultural contexts. It analyzes how the narrative constructed by the story within its historical moment is appropriately reflected in translation. Although several problems exist within the translations—which at times fail to fully convey the cultural specificity of the source text—the paper discusses in detail how such limitations have been addressed through the use of annotations and explanatory notes. | ||
