This essay
offers a detailed discussion of the evolution and significance of modern
Bengali poetic translation, tracing its journey from classical Sanskrit
literature to Western modernism. It highlights the early contributions of
Rabindranath Tagore and Satyendranath Dutta, while placing special emphasis on
how major modernist poets such as Sudhindranath Dutta, Buddhadeva Bose, Bishnu
Dey, and Arun Mitra elevated translation into a profound act of creative
reconstruction. The author analyzes how these poets skillfully navigated the
complexities of remaining faithful to the original texts of poets like Stéphane Mallarmé, Charles
Baudelaire, and T. S. Eliot, while simultaneously transforming the translated
works into successful and independent Bengali poems. Finally, the essay
expresses concern over the recent slowdown in contemporary practices of poetic
translation in the age of globalization and calls for a renewed, deeper
engagement with world literature to enrich the future of Bengali poetry. | ||
